Cyber Security Syllabus

What a good cyber security course teaches, module by module, in plain English. Use it to check any course before you pay, or to plan your own self-study.

⚡ Short answer

A good cyber security syllabus starts with networking, Linux and Windows basics, then moves to security fundamentals, SOC and SIEM, ethical hacking and VAPT, web application security and cloud security. It should end with hands-on projects and interview practice. Most job-focused courses cover this in about 4–6 months.

What you will learn

Cyber security syllabus, module by module

This cyber security syllabus has eight modules, in the order most learners find easiest. Each one builds on the one before it.

Module 1 · Foundation

Computer and networking basics

How computers talk to each other: OSI and TCP/IP models, IP addresses, ports, DNS, HTTP and other common protocols.

Module 2 · Foundation

Linux and Windows basics

Using the command line, files and permissions, users, services, and reading system logs on both systems.

Module 3 · Core

Security fundamentals

The CIA triad, common attacks like phishing and malware, firewalls, encryption basics and access control.

Module 4 · Defence

SOC and SIEM

How a Security Operations Centre works, reading alerts, analysing logs and using a SIEM tool such as Splunk.

Module 5 · Defence

Incident response

What to do when an attack happens: spot it, stop it from spreading, clean up, and write a short incident report.

Module 6 · Attack

Ethical hacking and VAPT

Recon, scanning with Nmap, finding and safely testing weak spots, and writing a clear VAPT report.

Module 7 · Attack

Web application security

OWASP Top 10 issues such as SQL injection and XSS, and testing websites safely with Burp Suite.

Module 8 · Modern

Cloud security basics

How AWS and Azure are secured, identity and access control, and the common cloud mistakes attackers look for.

Hands-on

Tools you will use

A cyber security syllabus is only useful if you practise with real tools. These are the ones employers ask about most.

Networking See and map traffic

Wireshark & Nmap

Monitoring SIEM for SOC work

Splunk

Testing Security testing OS

Kali Linux

Web testing Find web app bugs

Burp Suite

Exploitation Test known weaknesses

Metasploit

Practice Legal practice labs

TryHackMe

You do not need to master every tool. Learn the ones for your track well, and know what the others do. Our cyber security course in Hyderabad covers all eight modules with weekly labs on these tools.

Projects a good cyber security syllabus should include

Projects turn the syllabus into something you can show in an interview. Look for at least these four.

Project 1

Build a home lab

Set up a small network of virtual machines where you can safely attack and defend.

Project 2

Investigate alerts in a SIEM

Load logs into Splunk, find a suspicious login and write up what happened.

Project 3

Write a VAPT report

Test a practice machine, list the weak spots you found and explain how to fix them.

Project 4

Test a practice web app

Use Burp Suite on a deliberately weak web app and find OWASP Top 10 issues.

Time needed

How long does it take to finish the cyber security syllabus?

It depends on how deep you go and how much time you give each week.

1–2 months

Short course

Covers the basics only. Good for awareness, but usually not enough to get a job.

4–6 months

Job-focused course

The full syllabus with weekly labs and projects. The usual path to a first job.

6–12 months

Self-study

Possible with free resources, but slower without a guide, feedback or a clear order.

Before you pay

How to check a cyber security syllabus before you pay

Many course pages list impressive topics. Watch out for these red flags.

✕  Only theory, with no weekly hands-on labs

✕  Skips networking and Linux basics at the start

✕  Lists many tools but no projects you can show

✕  Promises a certificate but no interview preparation

✕  Will not share the full syllabus in writing before you pay

Compare the syllabus and the fee together

Our course fees guide shows what a fair fee should include. You can also see full course pages for SOC analyst training and ethical hacking.

Frequently asked questions

What is the syllabus of a cyber security course?

Most courses cover networking, Linux and Windows basics, security fundamentals, SOC and SIEM, incident response, ethical hacking and VAPT, web application security and cloud security, followed by projects and interview practice.

Is coding required for cyber security?

Not at the start. Basic scripting in Python or Bash helps later, especially for ethical hacking, but you can begin without any coding.

How long does it take to complete the cyber security syllabus?

A job-focused course usually takes about 4–6 months with regular labs. Self-study often takes longer because you have to plan the order yourself.

Can a beginner or non-IT student follow this syllabus?

Yes. A good syllabus starts from computer and networking basics, so you do not need an IT background. Regular practice matters more than your degree.

Which certifications match this syllabus?

CompTIA Security+ fits the fundamentals, CEH fits the ethical hacking part, and Splunk or Microsoft security certificates fit the SOC part.

Is the CEH syllabus the same as a cyber security syllabus?

No. CEH focuses mostly on ethical hacking. A full cyber security syllabus also covers defence, SOC work, incident response and cloud security.
